Melt processing of LRE-Ba-Cu-O Superconductors

Unlike Y123, light rare earth (LRE: La, Nd, Sm, Eu; Gd) 123 supercoductors exhibit a LRE-Ba solid solution, which caused the depression of T_c in LRE123's when they are melt-processed in air. Recently, we have found that T_c's of these RE123 superconductors can greatly be enhanced when they are melt-processed in a reduced oxygen atmosphere. Furthermore, J_c values of these superconductors were larger than that of a good quality Y123 superconductor in high magnetic fields at 77 K. In this article, we describe successful melt-processing for LRE123 with high T_c and sharp transition.
