The dynamic response of a 1000kg hybrid eletromagnetic suspension (EMS) using High Temperature (HT_c) Bulk material is compared with a conventional electromagnetic bogie. As with a conventional system the hybrid suspension requires a feedback control system to stabilise it. The controller must account for the effects of the bulk HTc material because the stabilising control effect depends on the magnetic flux flow around the bulk material and at the pole faces. A Magnetic FInite Element analysis is used to develop a linear model used in the controller design. Magnet currents are reduced but the r.m.s current variation is increased.
