On the control of silicon ratio in ferrosilicon production

A Generalized Predictive Control, GPC, has been implemented at Icelandic Alloys Ltd. two ferrosilicon furnaces, for controlling the silicon ratio in tapped metal. The control is based on an ARX model of the furnace. The model is used to predict the silicon ratio one and two time steps ahead. The use of GPC has resulted in decreased variations in the chemical analysis of tapped metal and better results are also achieved in terms of keeping the silicon ratio near the desired value.
