A single-particle model is presented for the distribution among N_2, NO and N_2O of char-bound nitrogen during combustion in a fluidized bed. The N_2O is produced in the gas phase from HCN released during combustion while NO is produced on the char surface. N_2 accounts for the remaining nitrogen. The model incorporates the effects of ambient temperature and concentrations of O_2 and NO.
