The authors have developed a practical computer code "CTT" based on the Generalized Tank and Tube method with higher-order shcemes for numerically simulating the gas flow and mixture formation process in the intake ports and cylinders of reciprocating internal combustion engines. This code employs an efficient algorithm and therefore can calculate the three-dimensional gas flow and fuel spray behavior in the combustion chambers of fuel injection engines by means of personal. computers. Using this code, the gas flow characteristics in the cylinders to direct-injection diesel engines with various types of intake ports and combustion chambers have bene numerically analyzed, and also the spray behavior in the combustion chambers has been numerically simulated. Furthermore, the forming and collapsing processes of tumbling vortices in the cylinders of four-valve gasoline engines with various types of pistons have been numerically analyzed.
