The goal of this paper is to explain how the authours established a joint teaching project that enabled students from Asia. America and europe to improve theri knwoeldge in sustainable housing by studying systems integration and design approaches based on the different cultual backgrounds. An improtant goal of the joint teaching effort is to define criteria for sustainability of housig development. The focus of this class is durability and life-cycle costs of materials. The paper discusses the use of durable, high quality materials for the structue and envelope of houses in order to achieve an appropriate thermal mass. Other issues of improtance are the use offlexible, low-cost and reusable components and systems in order to achieve greater flexibility, the more efiecient use of materials with lower embodied energy, better recycling capabilities andthe applciation of higher degree of standadiztion and prefabrication. The integration of these concepts guarantees a long us period and ensures the long-term suitability of houses for their multiple users/owners.
