Shunt capacitor banks are installed on the electric power transmission system to provide voltage support during periods of high system loading. The amount of capacitance required is deterministically evaluated via extensive powerflow and dynamic stability studies. However, determining the corresponding amount of capacitance (including spares) to be installed in the field to achieve desired levels of reactive availability requires a probabilistic modeling of the multiple capacitor banks' aggregate availability. Application of the Binomial probability distribution Function enables such modeling to be performed in a logical fashion.
