Boiler flame monitoring systems for low NOx applications-an update

During the past few years the power industry has replaced or upgraded numerous coal, oil, and gas burneers in many plants to meet the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendment (CAAA) NOx emission standards. This paper discusses the boiler flame monitoring system, technologies, design features, and specifications that are available to meet the challenges of low NOx firing. In the next few years many additional burner modifications or replacements are expected as emissions limits are lowered further. This paper should help identify many issues that will need to be carfully addressed for future successful applications of boiler flame monitoring systems.
