Composite materials are used extensively but impacts by foreign objects are a source of concern since they can create internal damage that reduces the strength of the structure significantly. An important part of the study of impact is the development of appropriate mathematical models for predicting the contact force history. These models should account for the dynamics of the structure, the motion of the projectille, and the local deformation in the contact zone. In some cases, the structure behaves quasi-statically, in other caes the response involves the response of the entire structure and several vibration modes participate. Another type of response is observed for impacts of short duration when the feforamtion is localized in a small zone around the point of impact.
