Safe and reliable Computer Control Systems an Overview

In a survey of the concepts and method regarding reliability and safety in computer based systems the author (Thane96) came to the conclusion that software engineering is still immature as a discipline. Belief in now cliche "silver bullets" is ever claimed, even though their existence have been refuted several times during the last ten years. Even in more refined circumstances where the word dependability apply belief is central. The means by which dependability is achieved is believed to be a combination of fault free design, fault elimination and fault tolerance. The focus on belief shows that software engineering is still a craft. Belief is not good enough -- we need to know. This paper stresses some points of what yet needs to be devised.
