The U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) has installed new access risers (standpipes) on five inactive underground storage tanks that are partially filled with mixed and transurnaic waste. Installation of new risers was necessary to provide access for a sluicing system that will be used to remove the waste inventory from the tanks, located at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (OPNL) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The tanks are part of the Old Hydrofracture Facility (OHF), an inactive waste disposal test site. The total waste inventory for the five tanks exceeds 42,000 gal and is divided between a supernatant phase and a layer of sludge that has settled to the bottom of the tanks.
