At railyard sites, contaminants range in type and concentration according to numerous factors including ballast type, cargo transported, use of biological controls, terminal size, and quantity and condition of equipment stored and repaired. A common group of contaminants is inorganics (i.e., heavy metals). Based on review of existing information, complied from available literature such as company sales brochures, EPA documentation from the SITE program, theoretical, bench-scale, and pilot-scale investigations of washing technologies, soil washing could effectively be used at railyeard sites to remove heavy metals from impacted ballast.
