The Effect of Filler Content on the Lap Shear Strength of Epoy Based Adhesives

This study deals with epoxy based adhesives filled with two types of fillers, an alumina ceramic powder (ACP) and glass beads (GB) with the volume content varying from 0 to 3percent. Tensile and step lap shear tests were used concurrently to investigate the effect of volume filler content (Vf) on the bulk and adhesive properties. As expected the tensile strength decreased and the tensile modulus increased as the filler content increased. However, it is found that for the two type of fillers the step lap shear strength of aluminum/adhesive/aluminum joint increases with the filler content, reaches a maximum and then starts to vanish. The maximum shear strength was found at the volume filler of 10percent for the ACP and 20percent for the GB. Moreover, the improvement of the shear strength was significantly better with the ACP than with the GB. These behaviors are discussed in terms of adhesive versus cohesive failure concept.
