The free surface flow in a physical model of Combined Sewer Detention Tank (CSDT) was examined for Reynolds numbers between 2800 and 5000. Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) was applied to measure the instantaneous velocity field at different cross sections along the CSDT. LDA was used to verify the PIV results. The present results show the movement of large eddies awt the intake of the CSDT and make it possible to estimate the influence of the flow on sedimentation and erosion of induced material in addition to physical model experiments with waste water. Transient phenomenons at constant discharges can be observed as well as the velocity field for a simulated hydrograph.
