Besides in-plant recycling in China Steel Corporation, an amount of 420,000 tons iron-oxide sludge, generated and piled on sites for the past five years due to no allowanve of landfill, was reused as a protion of raw materials in stead of imported iron slag in cement plants in Taiwan. A five engineers taskforce struggled and overcome many difficulties, especially control of moisture and ironoxide content, elimination of odor and miscellaneous wastes. Finally, not only sludge waste was minimized with copying to stringent environmental regulations and some space demand was satisfied for China Steel Corporation Phase IV Expansion Project,a total cumulation of 13 million uSD in cost saving was found also. This paper tells five parts, background of reuse project, characteristics of ironoxide sludges, feasibility study and testing, problems and solution, and future prospects.
