The results of field studies of te small-scale spatial variability and seasonal dynamics of phytoplankton on the north Norwegian shelf are presented. The remote sensing has been carrie dout on board of RV "Jan Mayen" in May, June and Septemper 1995. The tuneable lidar FLS-S based on excimer and dye-lasers has been used to measure the horizontaland vertical profiles of phytoplankton abundance. The data were collacted in underway sensing along the tracks of 20-30 n.m. with horizontal spatial resolution of 100 m. In stratification measurements the liaar consistently sensed the water layers. shifted to the depth with the step of 3 m.
