Lessons Learned on the MTA Metro-North Railroad M-Series EMU Health Monitoring System

In a period of austere budgets, railcar "Health Monitoring Systems" is a technology that is increasingly being investigated by transit providers and other railroads to enable them to improve revenue service while simultaneously controlling their escalating maintenance costs. The MTA Metro-North Railroad is pioneering this technology with their M-Series electric multiple unit (EMU) fleet. This paper is a brief compilation of lessons learned and common sense advice for those contemplating implementing this technology for their own fleets.
