Continuous steam explosion pulping at high pressures and low residence times has been shown to produce stronger pulps versus those produced by lower pressure, longer residence time processes. When applied to non-woody fibers, continuous steam explosion pulping has the potential to increase pulp yield and lower chemical requirements, without the need for chemical recovery. Testing has been performed to further optimize and characterize the process with respect to pulp strength, yield and silica content, and data are presented for sugarcane bagasse at several conditions.
