The different types of strip unevenness are explained. The theory of multiroll leveling, tension leveling and pure stretch leveling is presented using a mathematical model which considers stresses in the longitudinal and transverse direction. The advantages, disadvantages and limitations of the different leveling processes are discussed. A modifed pure stretch process is explained which leads to improved flatness, as well as an in-line curvature control system which minimizes coilset and crossbow after leveling. To further improve flatness an inflatable bridle roll has been developed which allows for varying tension distribution across the strip width on-line and helps to compensate for variations in the incoming strip characteristics.
