BLITZ BLASTING UNDER NEW YORK CITY’S BUSIEST BUS TERMINAL

In January of 2009, S3II Tunnel Constructors (a joint venture of J.F. Shea, Skanska USA Civil NE and Schiavone Construction) commenced drill and blast operations for construction of the new 7-line subway tunnel under the Port Authority Bus Terminal located in midtown New York City. This paper will review the operational, technical and logistical challenges of blasting in a congested urban environment in a compressed time frame. We will explore the innovative methods developed by the project team to successfully perform close-in blasting in the midst of 24/7 bus traffic and within several feet of active subway operations. Extensive partnering between S3II and two of New York City’s largest public agencies, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority capital Construction (MTACC) and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) was essential to maintaining schedule and production objectives. Finally, a state of the art instrumentation and monitoring system implemented to measure the influence of the excavation on adjacent structures will be discussed.
