Intermodal freight transportation is the sector of the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) program that embraces movements of goods involving the use of two or more transportation modes. Despite the fact that ITS and intermodalism are viewed as natural partners in freight transportation, a clear definition of roles and opportunities for advancing this partner-ship is still limited. To bridges this gap, this paper identifies benefits from and impediments to the implementation of intermodal policies, and defines the role of U.S. government toward the facilitation and implementation of such policies.
