Mural thrombosis at the sight of an arterial stenosis commonly leads to embolization and the development of an occlusive thrombus. Platelet deposition in flowing blood may be said to be dependent on: 1) mass transport of platelets and clotting factors to the wall, 2) the reactivity of the platelets with the surface through activation and binding with specific adhesive proteins, and 3) the possible embolization of platelets from the surface by fluid dynamic forces.
