A simulation of the residual stress field for a thick section AISI type 316H austenitic stainless steel structure is described using the finite element code ABAQUS. An overview of the predicted residual stresses before and after service exposure is given. Measurements of the residual stress distribution through the thickness of the weld are dwcribed. The residual stresses are detemined using the deep hole method. Favourable comparisons between the measured and predicted residual stresses are obtained.
