This paper presents an investigation into a fatigue failure at the junction of the seal shaft and the seal back up for a high pressure vessel. Three factors were identified as causes for the fatigue failure: the fillet radius, the shaft diameter, and the fatigue failure: the fillet radius, the shaft diameter, and the angle of the cone portion of the seal shaft assembly. A number of different seal shaft fillet corner radius and shaft diameter as well as the head geometry are modeled and analyzed using Finite Element Method. Linear Elastic and contact elements are used for the stress analysis.
