In general, the unit operations of the polymer industry can arbitrarily be divided into three rather broad categories. For all polymeric materials, the initial process involves formation of the polymer in polymerization reactors. Polymerization systems are usually subdivided into four general categories of polymerization reactors: bulk, solution, suspension, and emulsion polymerization. The second generally recognized polymer processing operations are those operations that are concerned with shaping for forming polymeric materials. Such processing operations include extrusion, injection molding, blow molding, and fiber spinning. It is obvious that the analysis of these processes is based on fluid mechanics and the complex Theological behavior of polymer systems. Heat transfer is often coupled with fluid mechanics in these materials shaping processes.
