The morphological development during compounding of a polymer blend is a complex, intriguing and important subject. Many interesting observations were made in the literature. In 1990, Shih (1) reported the observation of many different flow regimes existed before a homogeneous polymer blend emerged from a successful blending process. Further investigation by the same author (2) lead to the discovery of the phase inversion mechanism while blending of a plastic and rubber system. The mechanism is important to a great majority of the commercial polymer blending processes including those for the manufacturing of rubber-reinforced plastics.
