On the basis of mass balance, the new accurate suction coefficient and its simplified calculation formula of reciprocating compressors were derived, and verified by an example. It shows that the suction coefficient of reciprocating compressor is strongly influenced by the head exchange during the suction process when the reciprocating compressor operates at gas critical conditions and is influenced by the clearance volume ratio when the reciprocating compressor operates at other conditions, this could be instructed for the structure design of reciprocating compressors working around critical conditions.
