Development of a large scale environental management plant for the decomissioning of the ukrainian SS19 nuclear arsenal

Ukraine is decommissioning the SS19 Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) based that were constructed during the Cold War when Ukraine was part of the soviet Union, The Candian public and private sector are proividing technical assistance in the development and management of the environmental aspects of this work. Approximately 180 sites are to be decommisioned over q 4 year period. The main contaminants of concrern are unsymmetrical dimethyl hydrazine (primary fuel for missiles) and conventional petroleum fuels. Two environmental assessments have been completed to establish the necessary scope and focus of the investigation phase of the proejct, and a remedial action plan has been prepared.
