The study was conducted to identify surrogate parameters that can be used to model the kinetics of ozone reactions in water. The experiments were conducted with Huron River water from Michigan. The study showed that there exists very good correlations between UV absorbance measured at a wavelength of 254 nm (UV-254) and total organic carbon concentration (TOC), humic substance concentration (HS), and total trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP). Since in-line spectroscopic measurements can be easily accomplished, UV-254 could be an excellent surrogate parameter for the modeling of ozonation kinetics and for the process control of water treatment processes involving ozonation.
