The part-tone-time-pattern and the part-tone-line-time-pattern, derived from a FTT-spectrum, is a suitable tool for detecting tonal components. One advantage is the aurally adequate representation of signals. The part-tone-line-patterns provides usefull results for analysing various time varying environmental and technical sounds like those from tires, fans, gear-boxes and wind power stations for example. A combination of some of these sources ocurs in interior car sounds.By analyzing further information of the part-tone-time-line-patterns it is possible to receive spectral and virtual pitches. This algorithm may also be used to obtain an objective value for the tonality of sounds and to calculate the impulsivness proposed by Heldmann.
