This paper reports a collaborative research project carried out in a spouted bed combustor with an Indonesian and a South Australian low-rank coal. The characteristics of ash deposition on bed material were compared for the tested coals. Ash samples were examined by means of chemical analysis, XRD and SEM-EDX. The coating thickness measured using SEM showed significant changes with bed temperature especially with the Indonesian coal. It was found that the temperature has a significant influence on the coating thickness and distribution of inorganic constituents into bed ash and cyclone ash. The results are considered to be important in understanding ash related problems in fluid bed combustors.
