Various pretreatments were carried out to Hans form the thermally stable form of organic sulfur to reactive species before pyrolysis. Experimental results showed combined process of rapid pyrolysis with potassium hydroxide pretreatment was effective for organic sulfur removal from subbituminous coal, whereas high desulfurization extents were obtained in the rapid pyrolysis with nitric acid pretreatment for lignite. Tetralin and nitric acid treatment caused remarkable sulfur reduction for bituminous coal.
