Yallourn coal was oxidized at 70°C for 6-12 h under atmospheric pressure in aqueous solutions of H_2O_2 and lower alcohols. The oxidation increased mcthanol solubility of the coal. The carbon loss as CO and CO_2 was decreased to less than 6wt% in the presence of alcohols except for tert-butyl alcohol. The oxidized coal was flash-pyrolyzcd at 764-800°C. Char yield was greatly decreased and tar and BTX yields were increased by the oxidation. The structural analysis based on ~(13)C NMR indicated that the oxidation did not change the aromatic ring structure and decreased the number of bridges.
