The NEDOL process 1t/d Process Supporting Unit (PSU) is a continuous test plant having three coal liquefaction reactors. At the NEDOL process, the slurry of coal and solvent is rapidly heated up to a temperature around 400°C in a slurry preheater and is fed to the coal liquefaction reactor where reaction temperature is 450-465°C and reaction pressure is 170 kg/cm~2G.Coal slurry sample was withdrawn from outlet of the slurry preheater to investigate the behavior of coal liquefaction reaction in initial stage before reactors. The material balance was calculated by the amount of the products obtained from outlet of the slurry preheater, and properties of the products were analyzed. The results are summarized as follows. Main product was still residue with low CO+CO_2 gas and water in the initial stage of the coal liquefaction reaction. Pyrite was already changed to pyrrhotite in the initial stage. The reaction in the initial stage did not proceed with the increasing in the G/L.
