The preliminary data obtained in this work indicates that the unburned carbon fraction of coal derived fly ash has significant catalytic activity for the hydrodehalogenation of halogcnatcd aromatic compounds of environmental concern. The results suggest that this low grade carbon may have value as either a sorbent or as a catalyst and this value may exceed its value as a fuel. If this carbon can be separated from the inorganic portion of the ash and marketed as a valuable product it will greatly reduce the environmental impact of this combustion byproduct while improving the overall economics of power production.
