It has been shown [hat carbon materials (CM) such as active carbons, carbon blacks, and fullerene-rich soot promote the hydrogenolysis of benzyl-methylnaphthalenes (BMN) in tetralin in N_2 at 450°C, and that their catalytic activities in tetralin dehydrogenation and in BMN hydrogenolysis have depended on their types and surface elemental compositions, suggesting the CM structure-dependent efficiencies of hydrogen utilization. The CM activities positively correlated with the benzoquinone-typc oxygen contents on their surfaces. These data suggest that the benzoquinone-typc moieties in CM can promote the BMN hydrogenolysis by shuttling tetralin hydrogens without intervention of H_2.
