Determination of the Microstructure of Activated Chars Made from Preswollen Coals

Thermal activated chars of high volatile coals pretreated by solvent swelling are investigated considering the influence of preswelling in their pore structure. The determined apparent surface areas and pore radii distribution show that preswelling causes a pore widening and an increase in total pore volume, but no development of new micropores. At the same burn-off the surface area increase of about 50 % and the pore volume of about 100 %.
