The effect of the mode of hydrogen delivery on coal conversion was compared in two coal liquefaction systems. In one, hydrogen was delivered to the coal via a hydrogen donor solvent; in the other via a catalyst and H_2 gas. In these experiments, the use of a supported Ni-Mo/Al_2O_3 catalyst with H_2 gas delivered hydrogen to coal more effectively than did tetralin donor solvent, particularly in the early stages of coal liquefaction where retrogressive reactions were most apt to take place.
