For noncatalytic liquefaction of Wyodak subbituminous coal in tetralin, drying and mildly oxidalive drying of the coal showed negative impacts on coal conversion at 350°C, but positive effects on runs at 425°C. When ammonium tetrathimolybdate (ATTM) was used as catalyst precursor, pre-drying the coal in vacuum or in air before ATTM impregnation did not decrease coal conversion into THF-solubles, but vacuum-drying resulted in lower oil yield. Drying also affected CO_2 yields in both noncatalytic and catalytic runs.
