A phenolic resin containing diphenyl sulphonc has been used as a model to probe the behaviour of an oxidised sulphur functionality in atmospheric and high pressure TPR. At atmospheric pressure, thermal decomposition of the sulphone occurs with the release of SO_2 which is subsequently reduced to H_2S in the gas phase. In contrast, under high pressure conditions, the sulphonc is reduced to the corresponding sulphide which then releases hydrogen sulphide at the characteristic reduction temperature of ea. 300°C for diphenyl sulphide. These findings are used to interpret the profiles for peroxyacetic acid-treated coals.
