Victorian brown coal was upgraded to solid fuel with a higher heating value by the UBC process. In the UBC process, the coal is dewatered in a petroleum-derived oil which is recovered after dewatering by centrifuging and vaporization. The reactivity of this upgraded coal (UBC) for low temperature oxidation is reduced by its structural change during dewatering. When the oil contains asphalt, the coal-oil slurry was stabilized, and the oxidation reactivity of UBC further decreased.
