The cost of a product is an important factor in the success of a number of industries, but it is critical to the survival of an aerospace firm. More importantly, because of both long new product development time and the extensive amount of mandatory quality inspection on any changes to new products, it is vital that an aerospace firm understand completely its product cost at the earliest possible moment, preferably at the designer's workstation. Unfortunately, there are few computer-based cost tools available to assist an aerospace designer. The objective of this paper is to describe the possible application of automated design-to-cost methods to the aerospace industry.
