WHERE IS THE ACTION IN SMART GRID DISTRIBUTION? WORD MINING OF PUBLISHED RESEARCH

As countries demand for energy grows and awareness on “greener” initiatives is wider spread, the global trend is now pointing towards the implementation of “Smart Grids” (SG) with a renewed focus on the distribution activity. Conservation, self-generation and storage of energy are becoming critical areas for human subsistence global wide. The objectives of this study are to analyze the concepts and technologies that Smart Grid literature is presenting via published research, identify what concepts are the hottest, and determine if they are related. We researched and analyzed the 474 abstracts that were available from the period 2008- 2012 with the restriction of topics containing Smart Grid Distribution (SGD) within ISI Web of Science, text mined them, and analyzed mentions and proximities of the key words. Results present the key words and their proximities which are closely related to the technologies under the umbrella of “Smart Grid”. The results show interesting facts about the focus of research as well as shifts from some technologies into others. The importance of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and consumer participation in the process was supported by this study.
