The Ultrasonci Time of Fligh Diffraction Technique (TOFD) was developed by the Naitonal Non Destructive Testing Centre at the United Knigdom Atomic Energy Authority in 1974. The method was pioneered by Dr Maurice Silk in order to develop a technique to size flaws in heavy walled nuclear pressure vessels.(1).
