Manufacture of Large steel forgings involves melting and refining of large volume of steel, Strict process control in ingot making, elaborate and long forging process, lengthy annealing cycle and finally the quality heat treatment. Due to numerious variables, quality problem are segregation Primary and Secondary shrinkage, flakes partially broken dendtrites, non-metallic inclusions etc. by adequate process control and use of latest technology, the quality problems mentioned above can be minimised. Non destructive Evalaution (NDE) and monitoring of problems by ultrasonic right from the begining can help guide future course of action. Also MPT and boroscopy help in analysing and findign solutions to these quality problems.
