Two-phase flow induced instabilities constitute an important operational (and, indirectly, safety) issue for boiling water reactor (BWR) power plants. As several recent BWR instability events indicate, the various coupled neutronic and thermal-hydraulic phenomena governing BWR dynamics are not fully understood. Indeed, only by improving our understanding of the physical fundamentals of the neutronically-coupled two-phase flow dynamics, a significant progress can be made in the predictive capabilities of models and computer codes used to study reactor instabilities.
