An analytical model and a calculation method to predict the lightning performance pertinent to the features of the compact lines are used in the paper. The results of 500 kV conventional and compact lines are compared with those resulted from the Regulation method. The effects of the distance between two shield wires, air clearances of the tower and the impulse footing resistance are evaluated. Differing from the Regulation method, the method used in this paper can analyze the impacts of tower structure (guyed-V tower or self-supporting tower) and the power frequency voltage on the critical stroke current.
