The flow field within the cylinder of an internal combustion (IC) engine is the most important factor controlling the combustion process. Therefore, it is crucial for a designer to understand such a flow field in order to improve the performance of a design. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques have been widely applied to various problems very successfully. It is also applied to the flow calculation for port flow of an IC engine as the engineers trying to understand better the flow fields within combustion cylinders. However, the grid generation process for such a CFD application is a tedious and labor-intensive task. This paper is to discuss the development of a customized grid generation code tailored for IC engine port flow configurations, which significantly reduces the turn-around time needed for generating a grid. The primary emphasis is on its modularized geometry definition and the grid topology. Real-world industrial designs are also presented as examples at the end of this paper.
