Coastal Development and Stormwater Management Along Coastal Highway

The purpose of this paper is to show the various methods and techniques utilized by different designers to meet the strict requirements set forth by the State of Delaware's Sediment Control and Stormwater Management Program. Specifically, four projects within a 3.22 kilometer (2 mile) corridor were faced with design constraints which resulted in four distinctive systems. These projects feature different combinations of structural and nonstructural practices including: detention facilities, retention facilities, created wetlands, subsurface storage, and subsurface storage/infiltration. This paper discusses each project with the corresponding nonpoint pollution concerns, site limitations, hydrologic computations (TR-55), erosion and sediment control, and the perpetual maintenance of each facility.
