This paper presents the development of an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) that optimally processes accelerometer data collected during short-duration impact acceleration tests. Data is gathered with arrays of accelerometers mounted on the subject's mouth and on the sled. The EKF yields the history of the rotational and translational kinematics of the origin of the mouth-mounted sensor array. The state-variable model that uses quaternions for the rotational states is described. Filtering results and analysis of the estimation error are presented.
